Aquatic plants are not recommended for recirculating pools. Decayed plant material tends to promote algae growth, clogging pump filters. Algae may be prevented with a weak solution of commercially available swimming pool product.
Cold weather and freezing should not hurt the fountain itself. The submersible pump should be cut off in advance and the pool drained. The pump in any case should not be operated in extreme cold.
